Our possums are well loved and respected. There aren't any downsides to having them around, and as others have mentioned, they are the terror of slugs and snails. They don't go after some or most. They get them all. When I run into them at night they don't run away. They know me. Overall, a sweet, good-natured creature. We are lucky they are around. 😊

We get these in Scotland. They will bite through clothes especially on shoulders where the clothes are tight. The bites often swell for some people. Only way I've ever noticed to reduce instances of biting is to take your hat off and rhythmically whip your shoulders like a horse's tail. I've tried everything spray, foods etc but the self flogging offered a deterrent. But don't ever decide to have lunch where it's happening walk another mile

Not sure I'd describe a horse fly as an "amazing" animal... LOL Deer flies are the bane of my existence here in coastal VA during the late spring and early summer. Horrible annoying biting little suckers. However, I've found that Tea Tree Oil actually does show some effectiveness in deterring them. Don't leave home w/o a few dabs on my collar, arms, and brim of my hat.

A wonderful work you're doing, and a wonderful movie- maybe the Opossums might adapt to Europe in the future, just like raccoons did. We could do with some tick vaccuum cleaners ;-) . A lot of highways and roads get fenced of, for frogs, hedgehogs etc,of course the loss of animal life at our roads and highways is still devastating.

In nature, population dynamics mean the number of any given critter can vary quite a bit from year to year....one year a couple decades ago, opossums were all over the place! They even got trapped in our oven one summer night, crawling in through an open kitchen door...you could even hear their subtle "eek eek eeek" cries outside....they were not too wild, you could pick 'em up (with thick gloves of course!!) We've seen 'em since then, usually after dark around our compost heap, but never as many as there were that year 'round 1990. Same with snakes - some years we get lots of rattlers, king snakes and racers, other years not so much.... it's not just the weather tho - this year it's not too hot, but there's been a lot! Interesting....they call baby kangaroos "Joey" too - is that a general term for marsupial young?

I really hate these things. They never relent unless you kill them. Impossible to shoo away and they hone in on you and follow you even if you try to run. They are also very fast flyers and can reach up to 60Km/H in speed, so they are impossible to outrun. And their bites REALLY hurt like hell.

Every summer at Scout camp we would observe the pair, possum and armidillo, following their way along the creek and thru our camp digging here and there, foraging as though we weren't really there. Only later did I discover that very big possoms can try to cross roadways at night without regard for oncoming motorcycle traffic. Once I saw a huge armadillo ahead in the lights of a pickup truck become airborne and fly toward me and slide to a stop blocking my turn off the highway. I dragged that cracked and bleeding yard-long body by the tail into the edge of the woods only to discover on the next day that it had moved on to parts unknown.
